Introducing French Trio ONEFOOT

Sébastien Hélary
Co-Founder
s.helary@nextbop.com / @helaryous

Shots fired in Paris. ONEFOOT, the trio comprised of keyboardist Yessaï Karapetian, bassist Marc Karapetian and drummer Matthieu Font, is rapidly making a name for itself in the Old Continent with appearances at several major festivals in France. With a fresh and novel style borrowing as much from jazz than from video game music by way of 80's electronica and modern post-dubstep, ONEFOOT will simply melt your brain (hashtag mind blown). The young Frenchmen just dropped their debut album, Mektonized, unabashedly throwing all reason and convention out of the window. There are trailblazers and then there are trailblazers on crack. ONEFOOT is surely part of the latter. For a foray into their pleasantly addictive universe, check out the title track off Mektonized below. You can stream the album on Bandcamp.

On Portrait Of, the sophomore offering from Los Angeles-based experimental quartet Similar Fashion, the group presents an intricate yet viscerally compelling musical object, full of inventive layering and development of musical material that remains very accessible, likely in part due to the tangibly joyful ensemble dynamic that you can't help but smile at.

I was cutting it close this week, arriving at the radio station just a half hour before my show was set to start with barely any ideas on what to play. I managed to pull it all together, though, with a full hour of newness that rises to the high expectations you have of this show.

Quin Kirchner - 'The Other Side of Time'

Brian Kiwanuka

When speaking of jazz cities, New York and New Orleans are the ones that immediately come to mind, however, Chicago also deserves a shout. The city is no stranger to jazz creativity, being the home of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians and having a scene which honed the chops of talented modern jazz names such as Tomeka Reid, Jaimie Branch and Matana Roberts. Drummer Quin Kirchner, a Chi-Town native, proves to be another quality example of the Chicago scene in his debut record, The Other Side of Time. The bandleader is an integral part of his skillful quintet made up of Nick Broste (trombone), Nate Lepine (tenor saxophone, flute), Jason Stein (bass clarinet) and Matt Ulery (bass).
