ChimyTina, the duo of vocalist Martina DaSilva, leader of the jazz vocal harmony group The Ladybugs, and bassist Dan “Chimy” Chmielinski (Wynton Marsalis, Marc Cary, Brad Mehldau, and Joey Alexander) began collaborating in 2014 for what has now become a semi-regular video series featuring bass-vocal renditions of classic standards such as “The Best Things In Life Are Free”, “When I Grow Too Old To Dream”, and “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas”.
The duo is set to release their debut album A Very ChimyTina Christmas, featuring guest appearances by saxophonist Lucas Pino, vibraphonist Joel Ross, guitarist Gabe Schnider and bassist Ben Wolfe, tomorrow on Outside in Music.
The album revisits nine holiday classics including “Greensleeves,” “The Christmas Song,” “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,” “My Favorite Things,” “When You Wish Upon A Star,” João Gilberto’s “Presente De Natal,” “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town,” and the lead single “Last Christmas”, originally recorded by Wham!.
A Very ChimyTina Christmas is truly Christmas music done right. The arrangements are inspired, and DaSilva’s warm vocals shine brightly while Chmielinski’s bass lines showcase both versatility and maturity. The guest appearances are spot on and overall the record just exudes coolness and poise.
Check out the music video for “Last Christmas” below. We’ll definitely be spinning the album all month long.
