Progressive power jazz trio Myriad3, out of Toronto, released their sophomore album The Where last June on Alma records. It got a few plays on Anthony’s The Line-Up upon release, but it hadn’t come to my attention before the band released a video clip for the single “der Trockner” about a month ago. This led me to obtaining the album which features Chris Donnelly on piano, Dan Fortin on bass and Ernesto Cervini on drums. The Where is an interestingly crafted album which shows true potential and maturity for the relatively young band. Reminiscent of The Bad Plus, e.s.t., Vijay Iyer and even Brad Mehldau, the trio nonetheless showcases a compelling range of emotions and styles from the explosive “First Flight” and “Brown” to the soothing “Strong One” by way of the humorous “Bebob Medley” and the contemplative “The Where” and “Don’t You Think”. This album is well worth listening to and we will surely be looking forward to this band’s next release. In the mean time, check out the EPK and the video clip for the single “der Trockner” below the jump.
