Pianist Eric Hirsh has been a North Carolina staple for a while now, backing assorted groups (most notably hip-hop collective The Beast alongside Pierce Freelon) and providing a sensible, expressive touch. However, it is only now that he is releasing his first album of original compositions as a leader– Distillation, out August 10th. Now in the lead up to Distillation‘s release, Hirsch has just dropped the first single and studio video of “To Comfort a Shadow”, featuring his band of bassist Pete Kimosh, drummer Stephen Coffman, and tenor saxophonist Aaron Hill. It’s an easygoing 11 minutes that’s a gentle roll you’re sure to enjoy. Check it out after the jump.

Distillation, the debut album from pianist Eric Hirsh, is out August 10th. You can pre-order it now at Hirsh’s Bandcamp.
