A few weeks ago, Dave King, drummer of the renowned The Bad Plus, broke the jazz Twitterverse (Did you get that Kim Kardashian reference? Did you?) by debuting a series of drum instructional videos titled ‘Rational Funk’. The profanity-laden (censored with bleeps of course), crazy, over-the-top videos are simply MacArthur worthy genius. Dave King blabbers on hilariously not only about playing the drum but also about general life skills you need to acquire as well as tips on how to succeed in the music industry, all this with a knack for pop culture references. “I knew there was more I could do with YouTube than just watching old SCTV clips on tour,” says King. “Unless I get better at Minecraft, makeup tutorials, or un-boxing a Samsung Galaxy, I feel like sharing what I’ve learned about a life in music is the best way for me to ‘give back’ while also hopefully making some gas money off pre-roll trailers for Michael Bay movies.” Check out the eight released ‘Rational Funk’ videos below the jump (episode one has 20,000 views so you know it’s good!).
