Somehwehere over the course of this last week, while watching the latest video of The Seasons, that I realized Ben Wendel is most certainly my favorite saxophonist this year. It’s work like his monthly video series shot by Alex Chaloff wherein Wendel performs duets composed specifically with 12 different musicians inspired by Tchiakovsky’s 1876 series of compositions of the same name that is so utterly captivating and attention grabbing. It’s an idea true to artistry and with friends like this past month’s entry, pianist Aaron Parks, the execution is a mesmerizing cinch. Watch the new video after the jump.

And for those in New York, the whole project comes together next month at the Jazz Gallery for two nights for The Season Live with Wendel, Taylor Eigsti & Parks on keys, Matt Brewer on bass, and Eric Harland on drums. The gig two sets at 7:30 & 9:30 over January 22 & 23 so if you’re around, it sounds like a good show.
