Trumpeter Terence Blanchard recently stopped by NPR studios to play a brief concert with what he has dubbed his E-collective. The band features Blanchard on trumpet with Fabian Almazan on piano, Charles Altura on guitar, Donald Ramsey on bass, and Chris Bailey on drums, and plays a funk-influenced brand of jazz heavy on wah-wah guitar and stabbed piano chords, backbeat drums and a funky bassline for the band to vamp over. Check out a video of the three-song concert after the jump and then move on to cop the band’s 2015 album Breathless. It’s a heavy concept, paying tribute to Eric Garner’s last words, but the band is definitely in a funky mode here, particularly for the first two tunes.
