“Who are we? We find that we live on an insignificant planet of a humdrum star lost in a galaxy tucked away in some forgotten corner of a universe in which there are far more galaxies than people.” These words, excerpted from Carl Sagan’s 1980 TV Show Cosmos, are the inspiration behind GoGo Penguin’s latest outing aptly named A Humdrum Star. Set to drop February 9th on Blue Note Records, the band’s sophomore release on the prestigious American label sees the UK electro-acoustic trio exploring new musical universes. “We started with this idea of ‘inner and outer’, and opposing things that are essentially the same,” says Rob Turner, drummer for the band. “A lot of the textures and sounds do come from the electronic writing, but co-producer Brendan Williams also wanted everything to be made as organically as possible.” Bassist Nick Blacka adds: “I think we felt even more liberated on this album—and I think there’s more of each of us on it.” Check out “Bardo” below, the new single from GoGo Penguin’s A Humdrum Star coming February 9th to your friendly neighborhood record store and your favorite not-so-friendly online retailer.
