Vysual Notes - Herbie Hancock 6/27 – The Imagine Project, A Disney Musical

Vy Drouin Le
Contributing Writer
info@nextbop.com

Herbie has become a true citizen of the world. Backstage, before the show, he recites Buddhist mantras. He comes on stage and addresses the crowd in French: “Bonjour Montréal!” He chose to hire a multiracial and multigenerational band. On the right, a young female bassist with very thick and very curly blond hair, and an older drummer, Caucasian as well. To the left, a guitarist and a keyboardist, both black men in their thirties, and Herbie in the middle. He’s wearing all black with a grey jacket, and seems very relaxed, walking around like he’s at home. He’s 70, but looks more like a 40-year-old in decent shape, maybe trying to lose a little bit of weight. He looks even younger when he grabs a white keytar and engages in a faceoff with his guitarist in a playful battle of higher and higher pitches in a decrescendo towards an almost inaudible note.

@nextbop: Marco Benevento concert is SiCK!!!!!
@nextbop: I *heart* Marco Benevento! #jazzlives #mtljazzfest
@checkoutjazz: This show like being in a PT Anderson movie filmed on a David Lynch set.
@nextbop: @checkoutjazz lol. Wrong venue and wrong audience.
@nextbop: @checkoutjazz this feels like if a jazzman was to play in a church. Wait. Thats actually whats happening!
@checkoutjazz: Still no backwards-speaking midget appearance. Otherwise, nice show.
@checkoutjazz: Another @marcobenevento encore. I think he likes playing this piano. A very nice instrument. As strange as this place is, great acoustics.
