The Line-Up for 24 September 2010

Another week, another Line-Up. This week's show sort of felt like pulling teeth, largely because I didn't have a particular theme or focus. Still, I felt likethe show turned out alright.

Christian Scott - K.K.P.D.
Yet another song that showed up on The Line-Up because it showed up on my commute. Plus, I haven't played this song on the air in a while. I figured it would be a good idea to start this week's show off with a bang.
Roy Hargrove Big Band - Roy Allen
I can't say enough how much I like this song. It's smooth and cool and the best thing about Hargrove's Emergence album. This is yet another one of those songs that's been a while since I played it.
Terence Blanchard - Choices
The computer picked this one but Blanchard has been on my mind since I rented Just Wright last weekend. That was an okay movie, and it was everything a forward thinking black person would want to put in an okay movie... other than better writing. Still the Terrence Blanchard (featuring Gerald Clayton) cameo was nice.
Kurt Elling - Nightmoves
I rather like this song. It can't beat the original by Michael Franks, but what can. Yes, I like Kurt Elling and Michael Franks. Wanna fight about it?
Gerald Clayton - Two Heads One Pillow
I really really really like this song and it's been too long since I've played it.
Bill Frisell - Winslow Homer
This one is here because I think the computer picked a song from the same category and I needed to replace it and Frisell caught my eye.
3 Cohens - Navad (The Wanderer)
Computer picked this one but it was bound to show up on this show eventually.
Ray Charles - Wha'd I Say
I didn't really do anything for John Coltrane/Ray Charles' birthday yesterday. Their birthdays are certainly worth recognition but they honestly don't mean as much to me as Joe Sample or Miles Davis' birthdays. That's just me. Still, even though it's not in the format of my show, I still love this song and felt it was appropriate to play it. Also, I always say if a song is worth playing, it's worth playing the long version.

Also, a couple of these tracks play twice. That's a screwup in the system and it should be fixed for the next time around. Hopefully, you'll find these songs so awesome, you'll say to yourself, "Man, that was great! I wish I could hear that song again right now!"
