The Line-Up for 13 December 2013

This week's show is all selections from my favorite jazz albums of 2013. I'm not sure what more I could say on top of the legions of lists I spent the last week writing (before this week of even more lists and this Friday's show reflecting said lists of the whole staff), but I'm going to try. Otherwise, here is a one hour radio version of the personal list of favorites I put together last week.

The Line-Up for 13 December 2013

Thundercat - Seven
This hour had the challenge of cramming ten songs into the hour, a task that I've not successfully done all too often in the history of my helming this show. Thus, when it came to my picking one of my favorite tracks from Apocalypse, I went with the noodly, kinda intellectual exercise that is a feel-good song played in a weird time signature. I just gotta be me.
THEESatisfaction - Wrong Turn
Gerald Clayton - Mao Nas Massa
This song is like a warm blanket. This song is so good, it feels like home.
Etienne Charles - You Don't Love Me (No No No)
Creole Soul has a song for everything. It's my sleeper hit of the year.
Kendrick Scott Oracle - Too Much
I don't know who in the world was asking for a cover of "Too Much" when Sufjan Stevens put this song out a couple years ago on The Age of Adz, but I'm glad Kendrick Scott and Alan Hampton saw it necessary to put a version of their own out into the world.
Flying Lotus - About That Time
Albert "Tootie" Heath/Ethan Iverson/Ben Street - Fire Waltz
I doubt I played any other song on repeat more than this one this year.
Wayne Shorter Quartet - Orbits
Sure, this song is great. Everything on this song is great, but I'd play the 23-minute "Pegasus" if I could.
Now Vs Now - Future Favela
Playing this track was a huge indulgence for me. It's a party, then it gets Latin, then it rises into the air like a balloon.
Ufsp - Physical Energy
Darryl Reeves - Butterfly feat. Lil John Roberts
I love this song and I have a soft spot for this song, but I really wish I had the time to play some of the other songs from this session if they weren't so gargantuan in length.
Terence Blanchard - Magnetic
I was really happy with this song choice but I may just save one of my more favorite songs from Magnetic for next week's show.
Ufsp - Ends Well
Butcher Brown - All I Know
I didn't put together a list of favorite songs of 2013, but if I did, know that this would be atop it.
