Jason Moran: MacArthur Genius

It was a surprise this morning to wake up and learn that Jason Moran is a MacArthur “genius”, but I’m sure he was more surprised than we were. Yes, the 2010 MacArthur fellows have been proclaimed on high and our very own vanguard of gangsterism has made the cut. (Creator of The Wire and Tremé, David Simon, is also part of the MacArthur class of 2010, so there’s another reason Seb will continue to rub his work in my face until I watch these shows.)

When NPR asked what he’ll do with the cool half a million dollars (in $100k annual installments), Moran stated he’d like to tour the US more, especially the South (maybe he’ll swing by San Antonio?) and take his group, the Bandwagon, to Senegal to study under percussionist Doudou N'Daiye Rose. That sounds like a pretty good plan.
