The Line-Up for 22 October 2010

I'm not really in the mood to explain my rationale for each track for this week's show. The only thing I feel I need to explain is the two tracks from Jaspects, which I'm playing to note the SpelHouse homecoming that I'm unable to attend. Still, if I had left for Atlanta, I probably might not have been able to do my show this week and that means you would have missed out. We wouldn't have wanted that, would we?

I wasn't quite sure what kind of show I'd end up doing this week. I had a few songs scrawled on a Post-It like I often do to prepare each show, but I still didn't have a big idea for the week. All I knew was that I wanted to do something different. Well, I combed through some new stuff I got, thought about different sounds that are pleasing but challenging, and went a little off the beaten path through computer here to put together a pretty great show. Seriously, I was surprised about how good this show is. Hopefully I'm not alone in this sentiment but I'm rather excited about this playlist.

You Cannot Quite Put Your Finger On It

Last week, my radio station, KRTU San Antonio completed its annual fall pledge drive. (Yes, I’m going to harp on this one more time, but it leads to a point. Also, it’s not like we’ve closed our invitation to membership or anything.) While volunteering answering phones and hijacking all the free snacks I could take, I had a conversation with a gentleman about the wonder of America’s diversity (yes, I’m also harping on American ideals again). He was speaking on the wonder of our inability to define an American to one distinct image, but all while he was talking, I couldn’t help but think how jazz works the same way.

On Civil Discourse and Maligned Classifications

I'm the kind of guy who likes classifying things. Take any look at my past written work and I'm sure that's easy to discern. Everything should have a place and everything should be able to be described to others. Classification is the means in which we make sense of things. Judging from most of the discourse in the jazz and general music communities, I'm certain most people feel the same way.

Once again, it's time for the KRTU pledge drive, so I'm making the call to head to the site and donate to become a member of the station to keep great music like this on the air.
